Freehold Township was established in 1693. The Battle of Monmouth, fought in 1778, began near the site of the monument on Court St. Freehold is one of three original townships in Monmouth County.

Freehold Township is very rich in history. This land was first sighted by European Venetian John Cabot while sailing along the coast in 1498. The Lenni Lenape Indians originally inhabited the area called Freehold Township.
