Florence was incorporated as a New Jersey township in 1872. It was once a hotspot for vacationers from as far away as Philadelphia and New York. Florence-Roebling is an unincorporated town within Florence. Roebling was founded by the son of John A. Roebling, who owned John A. Roebling and Sons Co., which built and supplied steel for the Golden Gate Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and many other bridges. Roebling was home to the Roebling Steel Mill where steel and elevator cables were produced.
